Expert-data valuations go vertical: a reported ~$20B mark for Mercor, a $1.25B Labelbox, a $3.1B Arena — and what the capital is really paying for

In the space of a few weeks, the market put hard numbers on how much the business of human data is now worth. Investors are reported to be weighing a stake that would value Mercor, an expert-data marketplace, at roughly $20 billion — about double the mark it carried a year earlier. Labelbox raised more than $100 million at a $1.25 billion pre-money valuation on the back of an expert network it puts in the millions. Arena reached a $3.1 billion valuation after scaling revenue several-fold in a matter of months. Three different companies, one direction of travel.

What is striking is what the capital is actually buying. The early data-labeling market competed on volume: how many annotations you could attach, how cheaply. That game is over. The money now flows to whoever can find the right person, confirm they genuinely have the expertise they claim, and route their judgment to the model team that needs it. The scarce input is no longer labels; it is verified human expertise, captured in a form a model can learn from.

The mechanism underneath the valuations makes the point sharper. Vetting at this scale is being delegated to AI — short structured interviews, trust scoring, automated screening — which means the recorded, evaluated interaction is simultaneously how the expert is qualified and what the model is trained and measured against. The interview is not a gate in front of the data; the interview is the data.

For anyone sitting on a large, consented body of real technical assessment — recorded problem-solving, graded reasoning, expert judgment captured at the moment it was exercised — this repricing is the relevant backdrop. The firms attracting these valuations are, in effect, assembling from scratch what an interview corpus already is: structured evidence of how capable people actually think and perform. The capital is confirming the asset class; the question is who already owns the asset.

Key Points

  • Investors are reportedly weighing a stake that would value the expert-data marketplace Mercor at roughly $20B, about double a valuation set a year earlier
  • Labelbox raised $100M+ at a $1.25B pre-money valuation; Arena reached a $3.1B valuation after scaling revenue roughly 3x in months
  • The money is no longer chasing label volume — it is chasing the ability to find, vet and route the right human expertise
  • Vetting is increasingly AI-delegated, which makes recorded, evaluated interactions the raw material the whole model runs on
