Hiring-startup funding is flowing to AI screening and the ‘gigification’ of work

Source: Crunchbase News · Sep 18, 2026

A Crunchbase analysis of where employment-focused venture funding is going finds the money clustering in three places: AI-driven screening and interviewing, gig and staffing marketplaces, and AI productivity tools that make existing workers faster. The named beneficiaries span the spectrum — Mercor and Metaview on the AI-hiring-data side, Perfect ($23 million), Job&Talent ($108 million) and Aurasell across screening and staffing.

Two things stand out. First, capital is betting on augmentation over replacement: the winning pitch is workers doing their current jobs with AI assistance, not AI conjuring entirely new job categories. Second, and more relevant to us, AI keeps moving further up the hiring funnel — into sourcing, screening and first-round interviewing, the stages that used to be purely human.

As automated screening and AI interviewers handle more of the earliest candidate conversations, the volume of recorded, machine-processed hiring interactions climbs sharply. That is a double-edged development. It expands the pool of structured interview and assessment data enormously, but it also concentrates a great deal of sensitive, personal, consequential conversation inside automated systems — raising the stakes on consent, fairness and de-identification. The funding trend all but guarantees more interview data will exist; the unresolved question is whether it will be collected and handled in a way that is safe to reuse.

Key Points

  • Employment-startup capital is concentrating in three buckets: AI screening/interviewing, gig and staffing platforms, and AI productivity tooling
  • The pattern favors workers doing existing roles augmented by AI, rather than net-new job categories
  • Named companies include Mercor, Metaview, Perfect ($23M), Job&Talent ($108M) and Aurasell
  • AI is moving deeper into the top of the hiring funnel — sourcing, screening and first-round interviewing
