The DATA Foundation launches with 1.5B records and a public provenance layer

Source: Decrypt · Jun 25, 2026

Story Protocol has rebranded as The DATA Foundation and launched two linked products: DATA Network, a data-contribution and licensing layer, and Trace, a public provenance and consent audit tool. At launch the network registered 1.5 billion user-contributed records, integrated with Kled AI, and brought on a new CEO, Andrea Muttoni, alongside Kled founder Avi Patel joining as a Chief Data Officer advisor — a leadership signal that data governance, not just data volume, is meant to be the organization's core identity going forward.

Trace is the more interesting piece structurally. Rather than treating provenance and consent tracking as internal compliance plumbing, The DATA Foundation is making it a public-facing, auditable layer — effectively turning "we can prove where this data came from and that its contributors consented" into a marketable feature in its own right. That's a direct response to the same pressure reshaping licensing deals across the industry: AI labs increasingly need to defend their training data sourcing, not just acquire volume.

The 1.5 billion record count at launch is large in absolute terms, though the more important question is composition and quality — user-contributed records span a wide range of value depending on how they were collected and verified, and a public audit layer only matters if the underlying contribution and consent process holds up to scrutiny. The Kled integration and Patel's advisory role suggest the network is leaning on Kled's existing data-collection relationships rather than starting from zero.
